The season is austral winter: May to October, with June to September the core of the southeast trades.

Wind usually blows all day, without the thermal wait that defines the Caribbean. Morning sessions are on. November to April is summer: hot, humid, light wind and cyclone risk. Few people come to kite then. Le Morne is three spots in one. The inner lagoon, shallow and reef-protected, is where you learn and drill freestyle. The Kite Lagoon is more open and windier. One Eye is the reef wave outside: a perfect left, shallow, over coral and current, with a reputation for hurting unprepared riders. Do not improvise. A rescue boat, reef booties and a local briefing are not luxuries.

Sir Seewoosagur Ramgoolam airport (MRU) sits in the southeast of the island: about 60 km and a 1 to 1h15 drive to Le Morne. Private transfer or rental car. Taxis work, but agree the price first. Many hotels on the peninsula include pickup. Most travellers connect via Dubai, Paris or Johannesburg. It is a long trip, so give kite bags some margin.

What to do in Le Morne when there is no wind?

Hike Le Morne Brabant, the mountain above the spot: 3 to 4 hours round trip, with views over the lagoon and the “underwater waterfall” (a sand and light trick). Chamarel’s Seven Coloured Earth and waterfall are about 30 minutes away. Black River Gorges National Park for trails. Or snorkel the lagoon: same water you kite, minus the wind.
