What riding here is like

Season runs November to March, southern-hemisphere summer, peaking December to February.

The wind is the southeaster locals call the Cape Doctor: it fills in the afternoon, blows hard, and vanishes for days when the pressure shifts. This is not everyday wind like Ceará. It comes in blocks, and your plans need two or three dead days of slack. Blouberg is the stage: waves out front, a heavy shorebreak on the way in, Table Mountain behind. Strong wind means small kites. The Atlantic is cold even in summer: 4/3 wetsuit, no argument. Not a first-week spot. People who learn nearby usually go to Langebaan, about 1h to 1h30 north, a shallow flat lagoon. High season is packed. Blouberg hosts the Red Bull King of the Air.

Frequently asked questions

When is the best time to kitesurf in Cape Town?

The best season in Cape Town runs from January to January, with up to 55% kiteable days at the peak.

Is Cape Town good for beginners?

Cape Town suits riders who already stay upwind: waves water. Beginners will find better conditions at other spots in the region.

How do I get to Cape Town?

Cape Town International (CPT), about 30 km to Blouberg/Table View: 30 to 40 minutes outside rush hour. Rent a car. Spots are spread out (Blouberg, Sunset, Melkbos, Langebaan 1h to 1h30 away) and you will want to chase both wind and swell. Public transport is useless for a kiter with luggage.

What to do in Cape Town when there is no wind?

Windless days here are common enough that you should plan for them. Table Mountain (go early, before the queue and the cloud), Cape Point and the penguins at Boulders Beach, Stellenbosch and Constantia wine farms, or surf Muizenberg in False Bay’s warmer water. It is one of the few kite trips where the destination can carry a full week on its own.
